National Museum of Colombia
The National Museum is a cultural gem of the highest importance. Founded in 1823, it is one of the oldest museums in the Americas. It features seventeen permanent exhibition halls housing approximately 2,500 works and objects that reflect the country’s rich history and national heritage.
Established by the Congress of the Republic and opened to the public on July 4, 1824, it is dedicated to preserving the nation’s cultural values. Its calendar includes temporary exhibitions on national and international history, art, and archaeology, as well as academic and cultural programming.
The National Museum offers a continuous schedule of exhibitions covering different themes in history, anthropology, and national and international art. Through its programming, the Museum seeks to pay tribute to the great masters of Colombian art, highlight the nation’s cultural diversity, and bring regional voices to the capital. Hosting international exhibitions fosters exchanges between the National Museum and peer institutions worldwide.
The building served as the country’s most important prison for nearly 72 years. The structure was designed by Danish architect Thomas Reed, who also designed the National Capitol.
